Local Farmer’s Son Selected
Adam Symons has been chosen by Torridge and West Devon Lib Dems to
be the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate.
Adam was born and brought up near Clovelly in North Devon. A
farmer’s son, he attended schools in Bideford and Barnstaple, while working for
his father during the holidays. A keen sportsman, he has played for Bideford
rugby club, Hartland cricket club, Woolsery football club, and North Devon
hockey club.
He gained a degree from Magdalen College, Oxford, and a
Masters in Environmental Science from Nottingham University. He has worked in
the environmental field since 1997, in industry, consultancy and then in local
authority. He was Head of Waste Management at Oxfordshire County Council,
before, in 2005, he became an independent freelance environmental specialist.
Since then he has worked on projects throughout the country,
and overseas, helping to develop a Zero-waste strategy for the City of Omsk in
Siberia. He has worked for a range of clients including charities, businesses,
local authorities, and universities. He also lectures in waste management and
contaminated land.
Adam still lives on the farm near Clovelly with his wife,
Jo, and is a District Councillor for Hartland and Bradworthy. He is a Governor
of North Devon College, and a Governor of the Devon NHS Partnership Trust.
As a Councillor in Torridge, he sits on the affordable
housing working group, and is lead member for Health and for Waste and Recycling
in Torridge.
He is a vocal campaigner for local services and improving
educational opportunities for young people. He provides environmental advice to
local communities, working with communities to identify solutions, and
facilitate community action.
