Appledore Library
Community success in retaining library
Wednesday 29 November 2006
Local Councillor Len Ford
(Liberal Democrat, Northam) has welcomed a report on improving the County’s
Library service which recommended the retention of Appledore Library after local
people reacted so enthusiastically to the Library review. The report and its
recommendations, which were approved by Devon County Council Executive Committee
yesterday, follows the largest ever public consultation exercise on library
services in Devon.
Cllr
Ford said “Against a background of falling visits
and issues, during the consultation period Appledore had one the highest levels
of attendance at any of the staffed exhibitions, the second highest number of
responses by questionnaire and the third highest number of letters and emails
received. Users also got up a petition and support for retention of the library
was voiced by individual residents, the residents association and the parish and
district councils. I am enormously grateful to all these local people and the
Friends Group which was set up and wrote a ‘case for
retention’. This put forward such impressive
proposals for the future running and improvement of the library that I was in no
doubt that the County Council would reward their efforts.”
Cllr Ford continued
“Usage of the library has greatly increased and it
is predicted that this upward trend will continue. The wonderful response of the
local community has ensured that the library is retained on the basis that the
proposal by the Friends of Appledore Library (FOAL) that they take
responsibility for the building running costs and its maintenance and
development, will be explored. I am confident that usage of the library will
continue to grow and that the proposals put forward will ensure it is maintained
for the benefit of all local people.”
