Genetically Modified Crops

Do we want them in Torridge and West Devon?

Liberal Democrats in West Devon believe that public resistance to anything labelled “Contains Genetically Modified Organisms” makes the introduction of GMO’s into our area a serious threat to our economy. They are campaigning to keep them out, - the Conservatives and Independents are trying to kick the issue into touch!

It doesn't need rocket science to know that once bees are carrying the pollen, birds and the wind are carrying the seeds, and wild and domesticated animals are eating the residues, normal crops are going to be polluted.

Under present laws only 1% contamination is required for the produce to have to be labelled as containing Genetically Modified Material, - and that limit will come down as more sensitive tests are developed.

First in the line will be the organic farmers and the beekeepers. Who's going to take a Torridge and West Devon product off the supermarket shelf if it is labelled “This product contains Genetically Modified Organisms”? There are plenty of such foods available already, but you won't find them in the shops, because the shops know you won't buy them.

West Devon Liberal Democrat Councillors are urging the Council to ask the Government for exemption for our area when licenses to sow these crops are issued. The Conservative/Con-Dependent Council majority are trying to kick the initiative, which has wide support among other Councils, into touch.

WE SAY THAT THE WEST DEVON ECONOMY HAS SUFFERED ENOUGH
