£200 Levy on Local Residents' BillsRural Residents Rely on Fossil FuelTuesday 4 August 2009 Residents who rely on fossil fuel to heat their homes in Torridge and West Devon could be hit with a £200 levy. ![]() Will heating oils tanks such as these be taxed out of existence? The plans are contained in a government White Paper on proposals to fight climate change. The Low Carbon Transition Plan, an energy and climate change white paper, was published earlier this month by the Department for Energy and Climate Change. It sets out how the government will meet its target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 in a range of sectors including energy, agriculture, homes and workplaces. Torridge and West Devon Prospective MP, Adam Symons, said that the document ignores rural areas with high fuel poverty such as Torridge and West Devon. Adam said: “It is absolutely right that we should be promoting sustainable energy and seeking to reduce greenhouse gases. However, putting higher charges on those who struggle to meet their fuel bills currently, and have little option of alternatives, is unfair. “I do welcome the idea of a social tariff contained within the paper for those least well off and in fuel poverty. However, the Government’s proposals will not do anything for those who do not use mains electricity or gas for their heating. This includes a lot of people in Torridge and West Devon.” Note: Details of the Low Carbon Transition Plan
