Re-usable Recycling Bags for Unique Clovelly High Street

Encouragement for Residents to Recycle

Thursday 5 August 2010

Clovelly Recycling Bags

Cllr Adam Symons and son with Mrs Recycle and Re-usable Recycling Bag.

Exciting news to help residents in Clovelly Recycle - with the issue of Plastic woven re-usable Recycling bags with handles to enable residents to carry all their recycling to the South Molton Recycling Ltd wooden Recycling pavilion below the main visitors car park.

Cllr Symons organised with the assistance of Cathy Karniewicz AKA Mrs Recycle working for Torridge District Council, distributed these bags to the 80 homes in Clovelly.

“Clovelly is unique for Torridge District Council and because of the location and layout of the area is is more difficult for residents to recycle, therefore it is hoped that the re-usable Recycling bag will enable you to Recycle” says Richard Haste, Services Manager for Torridge District Council (Tel. 01237 428963).

Residents also received a Fridge memory jogger and contact details for any issues, concerns or suggestions to be passed on.

Bart Kelly was happy for one of his donkeys - “Toby” to model the Re-usable Recycling Bags with Cllr Symons and his young son - and Mrs Recycle.

Nick Harvey Launches Water Bills Survey

The South West Pay Much More for Water Than Anywhere Else in the Country

Monday 2 August 2010

North Devon MP Nick Harvey has launched a Water Bills Survey on his website to gather views on the disproportionate water rates paid in the south west from local residents and residents in other constituencies in the south west.

He said: “It is simply unfair that we in the south west pay much more for water than anywhere else in the country, and this is despite having some of the lowest incomes in England.”

The previous Government commissioned a report on water bills and how inequalities across the UK could be corrected.  The recommendations of the report are currently being reviewed by the water regulator OFWAT.

However, Mr Harvey believes OFWAT should be made aware of local people’s views and take them into consideration before they make their final conclusions.

He added: “I look forward to OFWAT’s final review of the report, but local people should also have their say.  I hope local residents will participate in my survey, the findings of which I’ll be presenting to OFWAT.”

Mr Harvey is firmly committed to finding a fair and just solution to the high water rates paid in the south west, as seen from the Water Tariffs Bill he presented last January with the support of the other Liberal Democrat south west MPs.

The bill, which called for the equalisation of water rates across the country, was dropped at the end of the last parliament.

Adam Symons said: “For years, Torridge and West Devon's residents have paid for the cleaning up of vast swathes of England's coastline. This is why our bills are so high. However, now is the time to push hard to make sure that we get fairness in the way this clean up is paid for. Local residents should have their say.”

If you would like to take the Water Bills Survey, you can find it on Nick’s website at http://www.nickharveymp.com/surveys/1/.
