Conference Motion
“A Fair, Free and Green Britain”
Torridge & West Devon Lib Dems get motion
as main item for debate at Regional Conference
Tuesday 6 November 2007
The Regional Conference committee
have agreed to put the Torridge & West Devon Lib Dems motion on “A Fair, Free
and Green Britain” (shown below) up for debate as the main item on Sunday
Morning 18th November at the Regional SouthWest/Devon and Cornwall Conference.
This is a great success for
members of the local party. The main speakers to the motion will be Adam
Symons (recently selected as PPC) and Baroness Sue Miller. This is
expected to be the only motion from Devon and Cornwall on the order paper, so
should ensure a lively debate and should elicit contributions from many regional
political stars.

This conference
believes that to implement nationally the Party’s desire for a fair, free and
green Britain, the Western Counties and Devon and Cornwall regions must play a
significant part using our natural resources, distinctive economies and
opportunities and therefore urges the Government to:
1. FAIR Give the regions a fair allocation of national
funds to take account of our largely rural economy and population, dependence on
tourism, agriculture, fishing and smaller than average but sparsely spread
communities, in order to preserve the availability and beauty of our attractions
as holiday destinations and improve our social, health and education services
and the regions’ economic viability. Give the regions fairer allocation of funds
for flood and coastal risk management in our increasingly vulnerable areas.
2. FREE Give our regions’ people, with their knowledge
of the regions’ needs, economies and attractions, greater control of their own
affairs through a democratically elected regional authority which will work with
and support their unitary councils including parishes, districts, counties,
cities and the new unitary authority in Cornwall aided by priority financial and
legislative assistance from the Westminster parliament and the European Union.
3. GREEN Support the regions’ efforts to harness our
tides, winds and water resources including the Severn and other tidal power
schemes (while preserving valuable ecological features of the regions) and
other carbon efficient energy generation and use including wind turbines on and
offshore, the preservation of our security and safety by decommissioning nuclear
power plants and the efficient use of our land. To achieve these ends the
regions’ and the nations’ governing bodies at all levels must provide incentives
by appropriate taxation and distribution of finance to develop green transport
and housing and other infrastructure.
