New Leader - Nick Clegg
Local Party Welcomes New Leader
Locals Hail Clegg as ‘Human’ politician
Tuesday 19
December 2007
Local Lib Dems
Parliamentary Spokesperson, Adam Symons, today hailed new leader of the Lib Dems,
Nick Clegg, as one of the few ‘human’ politicians.
Nick has
promised to give a voice to the people of Torridge and West Devon who feel
ignored by MPs who live and work in London, and don’t see the rural poverty of
the area at first hand.
Setting out his
priorities after being elected as party leader on December 18th, Nick Clegg,
said: “I am greatly honoured to have been chosen by members to be the new leader
of the Lib Dems. I know that throughout the Torridge and West Devon area, Lib
Dems work really hard to reach out to listen and represent local people. I want
to take this spirit of public service nationwide, giving everyone a chance to
contribute towards a better future for their children.”
“Other parties
keep talking of change, but then they just keep the status quo. The same
centralisation of power, the same voting system, and the same party funding
scandals. Many families feel let down because despite the constant talk of
change, the divide between rich and poor keeps growing. Only the Lib Dems are
committed to giving people in Torridge and West Devon a greater say in the
decisions that affect their lives, by shifting power away from Westminster and
back to local communities.
“I will fight
for a fair deal for Britain’s families, campaign tirelessly to cut crime, and
improve our NHS so it delivers the care people need.”
Adam Symons,
Local councillor and Parliamentary Spokesperson for the area said: “Nick Clegg
is going to be a great leader. Why – because he is human, and he feels the same
way that most of us do – disillusioned by two ‘clone’ parties who huff and puff
so much, but achieve so little. Labour and the Conservatives share so many
‘policies of change’, yet fight to keep the status quo. What they don’t realise
is that being a representative is actually about representing people – not their
own views. The time has come for a politician who will speak up for real people
and local communities - like ours in Torridge and West Devon.”
Nick Clegg factfile:
- MP for Sheffield Hallam, first elected in 2005
- Born in 1967, married to Miriam, with two young children
- Used to work managing aid projects overseas and as a trade negotiator
for the EU
- Leading the campaign to scrap the Government’s ineffective ID cards plan
and spend the money on more police instead
- His top three priorities are giving children the best start in life,
taking real action to cut crime and leading the fight to protect vital local
health services.
