Farmers’ Market
Award Winning Farmers' Market Visited By Council Leader
Monday 29 January 2007
Cllr Brian Greenslade, Liberal Democrat Leader of Devon County Council,
toured the award winning Farmers' Market in Tavistock on Saturday with
local Lib Dem Councillors. Cllr Greenslade was introduced to the Market
Manager, Maria Jones and Westden Liaison officer Gill Gorbutt by County
Councillor Roy Connelly (Tavistock). In 2004 the market was voted
‘Best Farmers’
Market by Devon Life and is a former finalist in Britain's Favourite
Farmers' Market.
Several Lib Dems Borough and Town Councillors joined the tour, during
which Cllr Greenslade met many stallholders and had the opportunity to
sample some of the wide range of locally produced food. He said
“I am delighted that Devon County Council
has actively encouraged people throughout the county to ensure that they
buy food produced locally as often as possible. Our councillors have an
excellent record of supporting Farmers’
Markets.”
Cllr Hosking (Yelverton Rural) said “We need
to do all that we can to ensure that people have access to the superb
food grown locally and that the producers benefit from the added value
of being able to sell direct within close proximity to where the food is
produced.”
Moving on to the adjacent Pannier Market, Cllr Greenslade was introduced
to many stallholders by Market Reeve, Eddie Carruthers. Cllr Greenslade,
who is Vice Chairman of the Association of Police Authorities for
England & Wales, also met the popular local Police Community Support
Officer and discussed work he is doing with young people in the town.

Parking Problems
Improve Parking in Tavistock
As Tavistock’s only County Councillor Roy Connelly has been trying to get
Tavistock Town Council, West Devon Borough Council and Devon County Council to
sit down together to resolve the deteriorating parking situation in Tavistock.
Both Tavistock Town and West Devon Borough Council operate car parks within
Tavistock. Devon County Council has responsibility for on street parking. All
three councils need to work together to get urgent resolution of the problem in
a co-ordinated way.
Cllr Roy Connelly has helped arrange a meeting of County Council, Borough
Council and Town Council representatives to discuss parking issues in early
September 2004, to work together on resolving this.
Make your views and ideas count
In his open letter to residents, Cllr Connelly says “Give me your views.
Email, phone me or write to me with them and any ideas. I am happy to meet with
you as well. This will mean that I can attend fully informed of what Tavistock
wants done.
“All of us in Tavistock can only celebrate being awarded ‘Best Market Town’
in England. Raised awareness brings in more visitors, money and jobs to help
local prosperity. Yet there are downsides, like the pressure on our existing
land, housing stock, and the forcing up of house prices beyond the reach of most
first-time buyers. With the planned building of an additional 600 houses in
Tavistock in the near future we will see greater demands being made upon our
infrastructure and roads network system.
“The most obvious urgent symbol of our success as a community is the Town
congestion which is happening. We need to resolve this. Should we have another
multi-story car park in Tavistock? Should we connect Bedford carpark to
Riverside carpark with a bridge over the Tavy? Do we need better,
localised public transport from the carparks? What other market towns should we
be speaking to about their solutions to the same problem?
Get in touch with me now! Don’t hold back with your ideas!”
