Lib Dems Launch Plans for Torridge District Council

Record Number of Candidates

Saturday 9 April 2011

Torridge Liberal Democrats launched their plans for Torridge District Council yesterday (Friday 8 April), against a background of a record number of candidates standing. The Lib Dems are fielding 23 candidates for the elections - more than at any other time.

Torridge Lib Dems have published their 3 point plan for Torridge in their Manifesto:

  1. Invest in local services and jobs;

  2. Share staff with North Devon;

  3. Be a community focused council.

Torridge Lib Dems want to accelerate the sharing of staff with North Devon, and use the money saved to re-invest in better housing, cleaner streets and developing employment. Lib Dem candidates have also said that they are dedicated to making sure that the highest standards are applied to councillors meetings and personal interests at all times.

Speaking at the launch, Parliamentary Spokesman and local councillor, Adam Symons, said: “The last four years at Torridge have been a bit of a damp squib. The current administration have not achieved much, and yet we find ourselves staring down the barrel of a £1.6 million deficit. This cannot go on!”

“Our plan is simple – share the services that we can share with North Devon; save money to re-invest in jobs and services; and make sure that Torridge Councillors are focused on their community, not themselves.”

“This simple plan has caught the imagination of many people, which is why we have a record number of candidates standing.”

Torridge Lib Dems Manifesto

Torridge Lib Dems have a simple plan:

  • Invest in local services and jobs
  • Share staff with North Devon
  • Community focused Council
How will we save money to invest in services?

The Lib Dems want Torridge Council to share staff and services with North Devon Council. The money we save we will re-invest in better housing, more recycling and cleaner streets. The Conservatives, who have led both councils over the last four years have failed to work
together, leading to money being poured down the drain.

How will this work?

Currently, both councils provide almost identical services, just in different parts of Northern Devon. This is a huge waste of YOUR money. Many of these services could be joined together, freeing up more money to do more things, and making these services better by learning from eachother.

How will we generate new jobs?

By working with the private and voluntary sectors, we will invest what money is available in education, training and in developing tourism, agriculture and clean energy.

Lib Dem councillors already work very closely with organisations such as Petroc, Citizens Advice and Torridge Training. We will support and work with these organisations to generate new jobs, new skills and new opportunities.

A Community focused Council!

All of you will have heard stories about Torridge!

It has had a reputation of Councillors doing what is right for them, not for their communities. It’s time this changed!

  • All Lib Dem candidates are dedicated to ensure that no personal interests will affect their behaviour at Torridge.
  • All Lib Dem councillors will vote to ensure that the highest standards are applied to ALL Council meetings.
  • All Lib Dem councillors will vote to keep the Standards Board running at Torridge - something the Conservatives want to abolish.

Tribute to Des Shadrick - Holsworthy's Brightest Light

It is with great sadness that we report the loss of Des Shadrick, who passed away on 18th April 2009 after a long battle with cancer.

“Throughout the time I have known Des, he has been a man of utmost integrity, courage and humanity. I cannot think of a better man to have represented the people of Holsworthy. He was passionate, and compassionate. He was a man of the highest principles who believed, and demonstrated, that people can make real changes in their communities for the better. I hope his life provides inspiration to many others, as it has done to mine.

“Des had an immense reputation in the rural communities of Devon. He never stopped trying to drive the area forward, even when he was unwell. He was a farmer, and a thinker. His passing is a great loss to all.”

Adam Symons
