News from Torridge District
Bid to Keep Pool OpenKeeping Torrington’s residents in the SwimMonday 14 February 2011 Councillor Geoff Lee is championing the bid to keep Torrington Pool open. There have been serious problems with the roof over the pool, so much so that many people think it may have to close permanently. Happily this may no longer be the case, as at a recent meeting at the District Council, the committee recommended to the Full Council that £400,000 should be allocated to replace the roof and refurbish the building. Once works are completed it is hoped that the pool will have another 20 years of useful life. In addition Great Torrington Town Council has offered £50,000, payable over five years, which shows the strong community support for the pool. Geoff said “This is fantastic news! A big ‘thank you’ is due to all the folks who wrote in giving their views - it really helped. Although the final decision will be made at the full council meeting on 21st February, I’m very hopeful that we will be successful in our bid to keep this essential community facility open.”
