Lib Dems gain new councillor in Appledore by-election

Kerry O’Rourke has become the tenth Liberal Democrat councillor on Torridge District Council after winning last Thursday’s by-election in Appledore. Kerry is well known for her work with voluntary groups in the area including the Foodbank, Torrington’s Globe Hotel, and as a trustee and presenter of Up Close Radio. In 2024, she won Bideford Town Council’s Citizen of the Year award for her work on behalf of the town’s most vulnerable residents.
Kerry, who was elected with just over 40% of the vote, said:
‘I’m incredibly grateful to the people of Appledore for putting your trust in me — thank you! Stepping into politics is a new chapter, but standing up for those who feel unheard is something I’ve always been passionate about. I’m here to listen, to learn, and to work hard for our community. I won’t let you down.’
The poll in Appledore was the only by-election in Devon to take place during the County election campaign and augurs well for Liberal Democrat ambitions to seize control of County Hall from the Conservatives. Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, leader of the Lib Dem group in Torridge, said:
‘We are delighted to have such a dynamic and charismatic new councillor on our team. I know Kerry will work hard for Appledore and its residents. Coming hard on the heels of the Lib Dem win across the water in Instow back in January, it is a sign that the Lib Dem values of community, public service, and fairness are appealing to voters who want a fresh start.’
Phil Hutty, parliamentary spokesperson for Torridge and Tavistock, said:
‘It has been a pleasure to join Kerry talking to the residents of Appledore and listening to their concerns. Kerry’s ability to connect with people and empathise with their problems is outstanding and she has the energy and determination to get things done on their behalf. As we go into the final stages of the County campaign, it is the Lib Dem candidates who have the credibility and the integrity people deserve in their new councillors.’
The full results of the Appledore by-election were:
Kerry O’Rourke, Liberal Democrat 304
Carrie Woodhouse, Conservative 235
Nigel Johnson, Independent 116
Keith Funnell, Green 91
